Please note: Vaccinations are currently required before going into the clinical settings.

The Medication Aide Program prepares students to safely administer or to assist in client self-administration, medications in specific settings. This class includes lecture, skills lab, and clinical experiences. Students will be able to facilitate, or assist, the client with the administration of insulin, prepare for safe administration of medications to clients in assisted living facilities, maintain aseptic conditions, understand basic pharmacology, follow appropriate procedures for documentation and much more. Upon successful completion of the course, the graduate will be eligible to apply to take the Registered Medication Aide (RMA) exam.

The RMA may work in Assisted Living Facilities licensed by the Department of Social Services. They may NOT administer medications in nursing homes or in home health care agencies. See www.dhp.virginia.gov for more information.

The student who successfully completes the 68-hour Medication Aide course, applies for and receives a letter from the Virginia Board of Nursing giving them provisional practice, may then practice for a period of 120 days from the date of the letter. After the 120 day period(or after failing the state examination 3 times-whichever comes first), all practice must stop. If the state examination is failed 3 times the person must re-register for and complete another 68-hour, Virginia Board of Nursing approved medication course.

The minimum requirement to enroll in this course is the successful completion of a Virginia Board of Nursing approved 120-hour Nurse Aide training program, or a 40-hour Department of Social Services Direct Care Staff training program.
